... Our History

When we first dreamed of creating a true art gallery for the area, we searched throughout Lee County, Alabama for a suitable site.  Nothing seemed to fit until we noticed a dilapidated old house right on Highway 14 in Loachapoka and fell in love with its neglected beauty.  We knew underneath all the peeling plaster and faded paint was a fine lady with strong bones.  We spent six months unmasking the beauty of the old house and now have filled it with beautiful treasures.

As with any renovation project, we encountered many surprises and challenges on the way.  We discovered that most of Loachapoka’s watershed dumped into our lot and settled underneath the house.  We got to know our plaster walls intimately since we had to scrape them, prime them, replaster them, prime them again, and finally paint them with 2 coats of glorious color.  In the end, our time and effort has paid off.  The gallery might not look as it did in 1907, but we can truly say we brought it back to life.

The Saugahatchee Creek runs through Lee County and parallels Hwy.14 from a distance. Saugahatchee means "Rattling Gourd" in Creek Indian. Thus, the Rattling Gourd Galley was born.
